Changeable May – sun-poor spring

The national average May temperature is currently 8.9 °C (as of May 29, 2024). This means that this year’s May is currently exactly on par with the 1991–2020 norm. May is now 2.3 °C warmer in Switzerland than during the pre-industrial reference period 1871–1900 (red climate trend in Figure 1).

Persistently changeable
From May 1st to May 8th and from May 12th to May 29th, not a day went by without precipitation falling in large areas of Switzerland, sometimes accompanied by thunderstorms. In most regions, there were only a few portugal mobile database days when there was significant rainfall. Otherwise, the daily amounts were rather low. Heavy precipitation fell on the southern side of the Alps from May 14th to May 16th.

 

Regionally many days of precipitation

A day of precipitation is defined as when the total over the whole day reaches at least 1 mm of precipitation. The following table shows the number of days of precipitation in this year’s May for several measurement series spanning over 120 years in Switzerland, compared to the 1991-2020 norm and the previous May record. At several measuring locations, the number of days of precipitation was above the norm. Bern-Zollikofen reported a near-record number of days of precipitation (as of May 29, 2024).

Abundant rainfall in some regions
The southern side of the Alps, parts of Valais and the lower Lake Geneva region received plenty of precipitation throughout the month. In the eastern Alps, however, precipitation totals remained below the 1991-2020 norm until the end of the month. However, the heavy rainfall expected at the end of the month will still bring about changes in the monthly totals.

Periodically very little sun
May brought below-average sunshine duration in many areas. The rainy period from May 1 to 8 was particularly sunny. But the sunshine duration also remained low on May 15 and 16 and from May 21 to 23 in many areas of Switzerland. Over the whole month, sunshine duration reached 70 to 80% in many areas, and 60 to 70% of the 1991-2020 norm on the southern side of the Alps and in the Engadin.
